Parliamentary Forum for Democracy delegation participated at the Tunisian School of Politics

This month, November 10, 2012 a group of Parliamentary Forum for Democracy participated in the Tunisian School of Politics (further – TSoP). The delegation consisted of Mr Emanuelis Zingeris - Chairman of the Lithuanian Parliament Committee on Foreign Affairs,  Chairman of the Parliamentary Forum for Democracy, Vice President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE),  Signatory to the Act on the Re-establishment of the State of Lithuania, Mr Matyas Eorsi - Former MP in Hungary and former Leader of ALDE at PACE, Ms Hanneke Gelderblom-Lankhout -  Former Member of the Dutch Parliament and Ms Viktorija Bražiūnaitė – Interim Director of the Parliamentary Forum for Democracy, Chairman of the Young Leaders Forum.  Over the course of couple hours of TSoP members of the PFD delegation presented and share their experiences on democratization processes in Eastern Europe; local democracy and decentralization; electoral law and organization of electoral management; transitional justice. It is important to mention, that it was agreed to expand geography of the project and include young politicians from such countries as Algeria, Egypt and possibly Morocco.

TSoP is a joint initiative of Centre des Etudes Méditerranéennes et Internationales (CEMI), Demo Finland, Netherlands Institute for the Multiparty Democracy (NIMD) and Bulgarian School of Politics (BSoP). CEMI is an implementing organization of the TSoP. The PFD will be cooperating on sending its members to the seminar cycles in September and October.

The overall objective of the TSoP is to strengthen inclusive democracy and youth participation in politics in Tunisia. In furtherance of this more general aim, the specific objective of the action is to increase the capacity and skills of politically active youth.

TSoP targets young people already active in political parties. The TSoP consists of the courses that provide youth politicians with increased knowledge of multiparty politics

and democratic practices. The courses also provide them with the necessary skills and tools to influence political decision-making in a more effective manner.

The programme draws on a wide network of Tunisian civil society organizations. In particular NGOs working in the field of youth issues are closely engaged in the programme in order to build constructive channels of communication between youth politicians and young people otherwise active in a civil society.
